Removing Wallpaper - A Simple Home Improvement Project

We have put together a list of what we think are the essential tools that you will need when stripping or removing your wallpaper.

As you may be aware, there are a huge array of techniques and tools that are recommended when stripping wallpaper. Your local home improvement retailer might tell you "just peal the wallpaper from the wall", and your neighbor could offer the advice of "just rub a little fabric softener on it". While these may be useful techniques for some, they don't fit for most situations.

A recent study indicates that wallpaper most people want to remove is between 5 to 15 years old. From our personal experience, this means that the wallpaper will be either extremely easy to remove because it's old and the adhesive brittle or it could be potentially very difficult as it may have been applied directly to the sheetrock.

In either case, here are what we believe to be the most valuable tools to your project:
Safety glasses or goggles: often over looked but an essential safety item.
Gloves: these can be dishwashing gloves or something to protect your hands from liquid and/or slips of the hand.
Plastic Sheet: Called and branded by a number of names, this is nothing more than a thin plastic sheet that can be found in the paint section of any home improvement retailer. Removing wallpaper usually creates a mess; therefore, use the sheet to not only cover the floor but any surrounding features. To keep it in place, use masking tape. And, when you are done with your project, just roll the whole thing up (wallpaper and all) and throw it away.

Zinsser Wallpaper Scraper: this tool does the same thing as a normal flat blade scrapper with the exception of one very important feature, its scraping blade is set to an optimal angle. This means that you won't have to worry about gouging the wall or damaging the sheetrock or drywall when scrapping. It may be a little more expensive to purchase than a normal scrapper but it will save you a lot of time. We are not brand promoting here, so if you find another manufacture that produces a tool that does the same thing, go with it. You should be able to find it at any of the larger home improvement retailers.

Drywall Screen: this is a metal "screen" that acts like sandpaper. It is designed to remove excess spackle or joint compound from drywall but it's extremely useful for removing the small areas of dry adhesive that may still be on the wall after you have removed all your wallpaper. It can also be used for those small tough patches of wallpaper that the scrapper that just cant get to.

Orbital Scorer: this tool is sometimes called a "paper tiger" or a "wallpaper scorer". Its function is to place small holes in your wallpaper so that removing agents or steam can loosen the wallpaper adhesive. It's a very useful tool and one you should have on hand if you need to use a steamer or removing agent.
Ok, here is where we, depending upon the wallpaper, use the following:

DIF Gel: there are many wallpaper removing agents made by this company but we have found the gel to be less messy. That is to say, it has less a tendency to drip off the wall onto the floor. It is a good one to use if your wallpaper is NOT applied directly onto the sheetrock (this means that when the wallpaper was installed, there was no undercoat of paint applied). It is also a good product for wallpaper that is coming off but not in large sections.

To apply the product, the best method that we have found is to score the wallpaper with the orbital scorer and then use a paint roller to spread the gel out evenly over the surface you are working on. Of course, we advise that you read the manufactures recommendations and safety warnings first.

Wallwik: This product is more of a "product pack" than a single product. This product is great for removing wallpaper that HAS been applied directly to sheetrock. It's also great for grass or fiber based wallpapers. It's also great for those wallpapers that nothing else seems to work. The downside to this product is it requires several steps to make it work. And since it's a product pack, you really need to purchase the pack to make it work. That is to say everything but the scoring tool, I still prefer the orbital scorer.

Once your wallpaper has been removed and the remaining adhesive is removed, you are now ready to proceed with your project. For some, this will be applying a coat of paint, for others this will be hanging new wallpaper.

Women Increasingly Drive Home Improvement Industry

Men have traditionally taken the lead on home improvement projects. But today, women are not only involved in the decision-making process of what needs to be done and whether to do-it-yourself or hire it done, but are also making the actual purchases. Women account for more than $70 billion worth of purchases in the home improvement industry, up from approximately $55 billion in 1995.

According to a recent survey by the Home Improvement Research Institute, within the first year of home ownership, women will authorize almost $9,000 on home improvement projects. A growing number of manufacturers and retailers have focused more marketing efforts on women and are capitalizing on this trend.

Women represent 44 percent of do-it-yourselfers and 51 percent of those who usually hire professionals for home improvement projects. Women account for more than half the sales of storage and organization products and almost half the sales of lighting, paint, kitchen/bath, lawn/garden, flooring and safety products.

Men still dominate when it comes to purchasing tools and power equipment, but the number of men who are looking to hire women-owned construction companies for home improvement projects has increased.

“I find,” says Jodi Garrett of Kitchens and Baths Design in Toronto, “that women tend to be a little more sympathetic to the concerns another woman might have when inviting a stranger into her home.” Ms. Bagwell has participated three times in the very popular “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” television show by helping people with special needs make improvements to their homes.

She adds, “Home remodeling can sometimes be painful to the homeowner. I enjoy a special camaraderie when I have the opportunity to work with another woman. They also appear to appreciate being able to talk to me a little easier about the technical terms and aspects of the project.”

Green Home Improvements and Property Values: Mutually Exclusive?

The environment has garnered a great deal of attention over the past few years, which has led many homeowners to make improvements on their homes that help reduce their impact on the environment. This shift in focus has led to an unfortunate battle with some Home Owners Associations across the country.

Homeowners' associations, or HOA's, are much like mini government entities that oversee the maintenance and the selling of homes in a particular community. These organizations make decisions on behalf of the entire community, and enforce rules that all homeowners in the area must abide by. These rules have been chosen with property values in mind, and if a homeowner refuses to adhere to these guidelines, they can be evicted by the HOA.

Green home improvements are controversial in HOA communities. Green changes such as solar paneling can take away from the aesthetics of a home and therefore drop the property value of that home and the homes around it. Many HOA's have in fact outlawed solar panels despite their environmental benefit, because of the risk they pose in terms of property value.

Some states, such as California, have reacted by making it illegal for HOA's to block the use of solar paneling.

Hanging clothes out to dry is one of the most talked about green improvement issues. Many HOA's around the country have banned the use of outdoor drying racks due to their unsightly nature. Again, if something isn't attractive, it must be removed, no matter what benefit it offers. Homeowners have been outraged by this, particularly in the southern states, where they don't want to run their dryer on hot summer days. The extra heat and the wasted electricity are two reasons that this rule is unreasonable, but HOA's are focused on the bottom line, and on maintaining a certain image for their community.

Even something as small as placing a fan in the front window can be a bone of contention for HOA's Despite the heat, and despite the effects on the environment, homeowners must use air conditioners to cool themselves down, simply to avoid giving their home a lived-in look.

For owners of historic homes, the battle can be even bigger. Homeowners must get improvements approved of before going ahead, or they face hefty fines and even eviction. HOA's in historical areas want to keep properties harmonious with each other, and true to their time period. Adding energy efficient window panes or solar paneling to reduce energy bills are simply out of the question. Modern adjustments would reduce the value of the property, so these improvements are actually seen as a detriment to the whole community.

If you want to make green improvements to your home, you must either move to an area where you won't be dictated to by an HOA, or else fight the powers that be, and try to create a more democratic and environmentally responsible system that all members of the community can live with.

Home Improvement: Use Help to Get Things Done

Let's face it: it's too easy to put off projects around the home. With a busy work schedule, kids and other interests, not to mention the need for some down time, it's a wonder anything gets done around the house and yard. The group meets early in the morning, sharing coffee and breakfast while discussing what is to be done that day. The host family is responsible for feeding their workers. The group also shares childcare for these work days, an imperative step towards getting the job done! The workers don't complain, but set themselves to the task at hand, knowing that when their turn comes, they'll reap the rewards of this buddy system.

There are a few reasons why this system works. First, it makes procrastination impossible. With a set schedule, and the commitment of others, it is almost impossible to avoid doing the job. Which brings me to the second point, which is that this system makes home improvement a social opportunity. While the families are definitely doing some hard work, they are also making time to talk and joke around a bit, things that make the work not seem so much like work.

Third, have you ever heard the expression "many hands make light work?" By working together, their jobs are done faster, so unpleasant renovations are not hanging over their heads for so long. Not to mention that something isn't as heavy when someone else is helping you hold it, or as awkward when someone steady's it for you. By sharing the job, whatever job it is, these families are making it easier on themselves.

The families have set good boundaries for themselves, as well. They work until 2 p.m. That way no one feels like they've lost their entire day. The host family gets five hours of labor to either complete, or at least get a good start on a major project around their home. No one gets burnt-out or over-worked, and everyone gets the satisfaction of knowing they are a part of a unique and working relationship.

This idea is inspiring, and more families would do well to take the example of this NJ group. I bet if everyone had a group to work with like this, all our houses and yards would be in better shape. Hey, property values could rise and we'd all be better off.

It is possible though that taking out a loan such as this will lessen your death benefits however, which means that should you die before the loan if paid off, your family will receive a much smaller payout.

In this little article, I have discussed three viable options on how you can pay for your home loan but there are still other options out there for you to look at. I didn't even talk about stock portfolios or title 1 loans. Make sure you shop around and find out what will works best for you. Always remember to settle the loan first and never go with the lender that a contractor suggests to you because there is no way to know if he is getting a commission from that lender leading you to pay hidden fees until you're too old to enjoy your remodeled home.

In an ideal world, this would be an easy process where banks would just give home improvement financing without any thought in the world on how and when you'd pay them back and you could enjoy your dream home. Then again, if this were an ideal world that Olympic sized swimming pool would've been included in your backyard when you bought the place at no extra charge.

Lighting can also be a difficult choice, you could have little spotlights built into the ceiling or the walls, also you want to be able to see to do hair make up etc. If you have small children can they reach the switch in the night if they need to go the bathroom? Pull cords are best for this.

Decorating isn't too much of a problem as you could have the walls tiled from ceiling to floor, you can buy bathroom paint these days, which holds the moisture and doesn't leave drips of water running down the wall. There are special wallpapers and pastes on the market too.

Flooring can be tiles, vinyl or carpet, though some people have laminate wood flooring. You could also have under floor heating put in and use the space you would have had for a radiator for something else.

Bathroom home improvements can be expensive, but if you work to a budget, your new bathroom will last for years.

You can now sit down and discuss this with you spouse who you would like to use knowing you have all the information you need to make an informed decision and no matter which one of these contractors you use they will be qualified to do the job taking about 50% of the headache out of the project.

This may seem like a lot of work but you will want to be sure that the home improvement contractor that is going to be helping you to fulfill one of your families dreams is the best you can get.

Loew's Home Improvement: Have You Shopped At Loew's?

One of my favorite childhood memories was going to Loew's Home Improvement stores with my grandfather, who was a general contractor. I would go into the store with him once or twice a week to pick up the materials he needed for a job, and to this day whenever I walk into a store I'm reminded of pushing a huge cart. Even though I'd sometimes run the it into people or display racks, my grandfather always let me push the cart when I asked him to. I remember him having a great rapport with the people who worked there, and we were constantly stopping to talk to one employee or another. They always seemed extremely knowledgeable and kind, and I genuinely looked forward to visiting with them whenever we went shopping there.

To this day, whenever I need materials for a project (which isn't very frequently, I'm not very handy), I look forward to walking through the automatic doors and breathing in the scent of the wood that is sold there. Like the days when I was a child, the store employees are still very nice and they always seem to know what they're talking about. Unlike at other chain stores, I never hesitate to ask an employee a question. Without fail at Loew's Home Improvement stores, if the employee I ask doesn't know how to help, he or she will find somebody who can.

I really get the feeling as though Loew's Home Improvement stores are bigger versions of the small town shops you see in old movies. Everyone's friendly and willing to lend you a hand. For me, Loew's Home Improvement stores are the only ones I'll go to for home related things. The store has really built a relationship with me, and I'm happy to take my paycheck there (even if it isn't with my grandpa).
